Detroit Jazz Festival guide: four free days downtown on Labor Day weekend
The Detroit Jazz Festival takes over downtown Detroit every Labor Day weekend, from Friday evening to Monday night, and it is free. It started in 1980 and bills itself as the largest free jazz festival in the world. Four days, several stages a few minutes' walk apart, and the Detroit River behind the main one.
When it is
Always Labor Day weekend. In 2027 that should be Friday 3 to Monday 6 September, but confirm the dates on the festival's own site once the lineup is out in early summer. Friday is a short evening. Saturday and Sunday are the big days, from midday to late.
Where the stages are
The main stages sit in Hart Plaza on the riverfront, with more up Woodward Avenue around Campus Martius Park. It is a ten-minute walk between them. Print or download the schedule, mark two or three sets you must see, and leave the rest to chance. Some of the best sets come from players you have never heard of.

Detroit is a jazz city
This is no out-of-town festival dropped on a park. Detroit gave jazz Milt Jackson, Yusef Lateef, Kenny Burrell, Betty Carter, Donald Byrd, Paul Chambers and Ron Carter, and the Jones brothers, Hank, Thad and Elvin, grew up in nearby Pontiac. Gretchen Valade, who founded Mack Avenue Records, endowed the festival so it could stay free. Each year an artist in residence plays several sets in different line-ups, and following them around is a good way to spend the weekend.
What to bring
A folding chair, because the grass and the good seats go early. A hat and water for the afternoons, which can be hot, and a layer for the evenings by the river, which can turn cool. Hart Plaza is mostly concrete, so wear proper shoes. Reserved seats near the main stages are sold separately if you want a guaranteed view.
Hotels and getting around
Book a downtown hotel in spring. The rooms within walking distance of Hart Plaza fill up, and prices rise as the weekend gets close. From downtown you can walk to every stage, and the QLine streetcar runs up Woodward if you want to see Midtown between sets.
After the last set
The clubs keep going after the festival stages close. Cliff Bell's downtown is the easy walk. Baker's Keyboard Lounge on Livernois, open since 1934, is a short drive and worth it. If you are staying an extra day, the Motown Museum is ten minutes away, but book Hitsville early: Labor Day weekend sells out.
