How we plan a night out

Any city can sell you a ticket. What a tour leader adds is knowing which of fifty bars has the band worth hearing tonight, when to arrive, where to stand, and when to leave for the next room.

On these tours the nights come first. In New Orleans that means Preservation Hall, three clubs on Frenchmen Street and a brass band uptown. In Nashville it is the Opry and the honky-tonks, with a bluegrass detour. In Austin, the Continental Club, ACL Live, the Broken Spoke and Red River. In Chicago, Buddy Guy's, the Green Mill and Kingston Mines. In Seattle, the Crocodile and Capitol Hill.

Days are shorter and mornings start later. The program show usually ends by eleven; after that the tour leader carries on with anyone who wants more and walks everyone back to the hotel.

Cover charges for the program nights are in the price. Drinks are not, and many clubs have a one or two drink minimum, which soft drinks count toward.
