Where country music lives now

Country music has two homes, and our tours visit both. Nashville is the business and the history: the Grand Ole Opry on the radio every week since 1925, the Ryman Auditorium where it broadcast for 31 years, Music Row where the songs are still written, and a strip of honky-tonks on Lower Broadway where bands play for tips from morning to two at night.

Austin is the other side of the family. The outlaw country of Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings grew there in the 1970s, away from the Nashville studios, and dance halls like the Broken Spoke still keep the Western swing of Bob Wills alive for couples in boots.

Americana sits between the two, in the songwriter rooms and the bluegrass bars. We always add one of those nights: the Station Inn in Nashville on a Sunday jam, a songwriters round where three writers play the hits they gave to stars, or the Saxon Pub in Austin.

Every country tour has seats bought ahead for the big shows, and a tour leader who has played the circuit and knows which band is worth a detour that night.

  • The Opry and the Ryman

Reserved seats for the shows, and backstage tours by day.

  • A songwriter night

  • Honky-tonks with a guide

The rooms with the best house bands, not the loudest.

  • Texas dance halls

Questions

About country & americana tours

Which country tour is best for a first visit?

Nashville: four days in Music City has the Opry, the Ryman, Studio B and a songwriter night. Add Memphis with the six-day tour.

Do I need to like modern country?

No. Our tours lean to the history and the traditional sound, with the new acts at the Opry for balance.

Can we dance?

At the Broken Spoke in Austin, after a lesson. In Nashville, at Robert's Western World on a good night.
