Rock and roll tours: Sun Studio, Graceland and the Rock Hall

Rock and roll tours follow a music that started in a storefront in Memphis in the 1950s, got its own hall of fame in Cleveland, and came roaring back in Seattle in the 1990s.

Seventy years in three tours

In 1954 a truck driver called Elvis Presley sang That's All Right at Sun Studio on Union Avenue in Memphis, and Sam Phillips knew he had found what he was looking for. Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison followed through the same door. Our Nashville and Memphis tour includes Sun, Graceland and a night on Beale Street.

Cleveland claims the name: the disc jockey Alan Freed used the phrase rock and roll on air there in the early 1950s, and the city won the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. We give it a full day on the Detroit and Cleveland tour, after the Motown Museum.

Seattle wrote the last great chapter. Jimi Hendrix grew up there; Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden came out of its clubs. The Seattle tour has the Museum of Pop Culture, the Crocodile, Hendrix's memorial and a day trip to Kurt Cobain's Aberdeen.

Every rock tour has a night at a real rock club, booked when the calendar has a band worth hearing.
