Austin live music is the reason to come: the self-named Live Music Capital of the World has around 250 venues, a dance hall where Willie Nelson played for tips, and the stage where Austin City Limits has been filmed since 1974.
From $2,2902 tours that go there
Austin's music scene grew out of a strange mix: the hippies and the cowboys of the early 1970s who met at the Armadillo World Headquarters and found they liked the same records. Willie Nelson came home from Nashville, the cosmic cowboys and the blues players of Antone's shared stages, and Stevie Ray Vaughan came up through the clubs on Sixth Street.
Our Austin tours stay on South Congress, a walk from the Continental Club and a short ride from downtown. We book a taping or a concert at ACL Live, an honky-tonk night with two-step lessons at the Broken Spoke, and a club route through Red River for the louder bands. In March and October the festival trips take over the town.

The places

East Sixth Street between Congress and the interstate was the club strip of the 1970s and 1980s, and on weekend nights it is still closed to cars and packed. Today the better music has moved a few blocks north to Red River Street, where the Mohawk, Stubb's and Cheer Up Charlies book touring rock, punk and indie bands on indoor and outdoor stages.
Stubb's, a barbecue joint with an amphitheater behind it, is the classic. Our tour leader picks two or three rooms each night and keeps the group together on the way back.

The Continental Club opened in 1955 as a supper club and became, by the 1980s, the best small rock and roll and roots music bar in Texas. The room is long and dark with a stage at the end, and the weekly residencies are the thing: some local bands have held the same night for twenty years.
Around it, South Congress Avenue is a strip of vintage shops, taco trucks and old motels turned into hip hotels, with a view up the avenue to the State Capitol. The Saxon Pub, a songwriter bar, is a mile south.

Austin City Limits is the longest-running music show on American television, first taped in 1974 at a studio on the University of Texas campus with Willie Nelson. Since 2011 it has been filmed downtown at the Moody Theater, a 2,750-seat hall built for it, which also hosts concerts most nights.
Taping tickets are free and given out by lottery, so we book a regular concert in the hall and add a taping when we can. Outside the doors stands a bronze statue of Willie Nelson, on Willie Nelson Boulevard.

The Colorado River runs through the middle of Austin as Lady Bird Lake. On its south shore, Auditorium Shores is a big lawn where the city holds free outdoor concerts, and a bronze statue of Stevie Ray Vaughan faces the water with his hat on and his guitar behind his back, and fans leave picks at his feet.
From late March to October about a million and a half bats live under the Congress Avenue Bridge, and at sunset they pour out in a long dark ribbon to feed. We watch from the bridge or the lawn below on the first evening, before dinner.

The Broken Spoke has stood on South Lamar since 1964, a low wooden dance hall with a restaurant in front, and has hardly changed. Bob Wills played here, George Strait played here before he was famous, and Willie Nelson still turns up on the photos on the walls.
The bands play classic country and Western swing for couples who two-step around the floor in boots. There is a short lesson early in the evening, and our groups take it: nobody is too old, and the regulars are happy to dance with visitors.
